ANNOUNCEMENT
Fairfield Area High School did not receive the grant from the Lenfest Foundation (no grants were awarded) to offer the SAT Prep program this year.  For that reason, there will be no offering for an SAT Prep course through Fairfield High School this spring.  While this news is very disappointing, students will be made aware of new FREE resources through Khan Academy and the College Board.  All students who took the PSAT in October will be meeting in the auditorium on February 1st to receive their PSAT score reports and to hear about how to access and utilize these free SAT prep materials.  There will not be a practice SAT proctored at the high school in February, as originally scheduled on the district calendar.

Students interested in applying for college should plan to take:
the PSAT test in 10th AND 11th grade
and
either the SAT or the ACT twice,
once in the spring of 11th grade and
again in the fall of 12th grade.

The SAT is being redesigned!

The "new" SAT will be used beginning in March of 2016.  Current seniors in the Class of 2016 should take the SAT prior to March.  Current juniors in the Class of 2017 should wait until March at the earliest to take the SAT the first time.  The "new" SAT will now have the following sections:  "Reading, Writing, & Language", "Math both with and without a calculator", and an optional "Essay".  Scoring will now be based on scores between 400 and 1600 (800 being a perfect score in the Reading and Math sections and the Essay section not included in the scoring).  Other important changes include - no penalty for wrong answers, fewer choices in the multiple choice questions, vocabulary more closely resembling every day language, and math questions more closely in line with what is taught in the classroom.  For more information, please look at the "New SAT" portion of the College Board's website - www.collegeboard.org

PSAT Testing and Resources
This test is offered at Fairfield Area High School, during the school day on the second Wednesday in October, as determined by the CollegeBoard.  There is a cost for taking this test. The cost is determined by the CollegeBoard and must be paid to the Counseling Office prior to testing day. 10th graders are strongly encouraged to take this test in order to see what is ahead of them! ALL 11th graders will take this test and have the cost covered by the school.  For Juniors this test may qualify them for scholarships through the National Merit Scholarship Corportation as well as help prepare them to take the SAT test in the spring.

PSAT score reports are sent directly to the high school during the first week in December. At that time, the students are given their score report AND their personal test booklet from that testing day in October. The score report contains important information to help students prepare for taking the SAT as well as learning more about their academic strengths and weaknesses.  The answers to each item are listed so that students may go back and better understand how the test is written.  Each student also has a personalized access code that they may each use at the CollegeBoard website for personalized test and college search help.  This tool is a wonderful way to prepare for tests and college exploring!  Please encourage your student to take advantage of this code!!

This document will help to explain how to read your student's score report.
